HISTORY

Marcovaldo Dionysos built the Chartreuse Swizzle for a Chartreuse-sponsored cocktail competition in San Francisco in 2003 and won with it. Green Chartreuse is the base rather than a modifier, held together by pineapple, lime and falernum — the same scaffolding a tiki drink would use, which is why it is usually filed with modern tiki. Swizzling with crushed ice chills and dilutes it at the same time, and the glass should frost before it is served.

SIGNIFICANT DEVELOPMENTS
  • It became a standard on tiki and modern-classic menus, and one of the few drinks that treats a liqueur as a full base spirit.
VARIATIONS & RELATIVES
  • Chartreuse Swizzle with yellow Chartreuse
  • Chartreuse Swizzle with a float of aged rum
ANECDOTES

“Falernum supplies the clove-and-almond note that keeps the drink from reading as pure pineapple juice.”
