HISTORY

The Rob Roy is named after the 1894 operetta about the Scottish outlaw Robert Roy MacGregor, which opened on Broadway near the original Waldorf-Astoria. The hotel is often credited with creating the drink by swapping Scotch for the whiskey in a Manhattan. An earlier, unrelated Rob Roy cocktail was recorded by New York bartender Edward F. Barry in 1873; the first recognisable Scotch version appears in print in 1901.
